Freie Stadt Danzig Reisepass
Reisepass Freie Stadt Danzig
This is a rare 4 x 6-¼ inch, 32-page Nazi passport issued by the Freie Stadt Danzig (Free City of Danzig) to Anna Pempeit. She was born as Anna Buker in Mönchengladbach (west of Düsseldorf in North Rhine-Westphalia ) on 1 May 1899 and moved to Danzig later. She had brown eyes and dark hair and did not have a job when this passport was issued at the passport office of the Polizei-Präsidium of Danzig on 3 June 1936. It was valid until 2 June 1941.
Nazi eagle and swastika police stamp from Gladbach-Rheydt
In order for Anna Pempeit to travel from Danzig to her Heimat (the area where she was born) by crossing the Polish Corridor in September 1937, she had a Polish visa stamped on page 32 and her arrival in Germany stamped on page 6 (a Nazi eagle and swastika police stamp from Gladbach-Rheydt). The passport also contains a Polish visa from June 1938 and border crossing and currency exchange stamps related to that trip to western Germany.
In between several pages of this rare passport we found dried flowers (including four-leaf clovers and Enzian or Gentian), so the buyer should be careful opening this 82 year old German passport. It is in used condition with old scotch tape on the spine. Exactly as shown!

At the end of World War II, the German name Danzig was changed to the Polish name Gdansk.
From times long before Napoleon, the south side of the Baltic was a part of the possessions of Teutonic Knights and subsequently became a part of Prussia, and Germany after confederation of the German states. In the wake of his victories, Napoleon declared the city and port of Danzig a Free State (it had been a famous Hanseatic port) and although not contiguous with Poland, Polish goods came and went via the Vistula River and the port of the German Free City of Danzig.

At the end of World War I, the country of Poland demanded, and got from Germany through the Treaty of Versailles, a "Corridor" from northern Poland across western Prussia to the Free City of Danzig on the eastern edge of the Corridor on the Baltic Sea.
