GERMAN TAX RETURN
FOR 1942 FOR DR. ERNST KALTENBRUNNER, GENERALLEUTNANT DER POLIZEI UND SS-GRUPPENFÜHRER |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
This is the full and complete 1942 German income tax return for Generalleutnant der Polizei und SS-Gruppenführer Dr. Ernst Kaltenbrunner of Wien (Vienna), Germany (now Austria). Kaltenbrunner, a childhood friend of Adolf Eichmann, was a principal police official and ran SS-Oberabschnitt Donau in that part of Germany known as Ostmark and rose to become Chief of the Reichssicherheitshauptamt (RSHA or State Main Security Office) after the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich.
In 1944 he also took over the Foreign and Counter Intelligence Department of the Abwehr which became a branch of the RSHA. On December 9 1944 he was awarded the Knight's Cross.
At the end of the war he fled to Tirol where he was arrested by the United States Army. He was brought before the International Military Tribunal at Nürnberg where he was convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity. He was hanged by the Allies on 16 October 1946.
The tax return consists of a 11-3/4 x 24-1/2 inch (folds to 8-1/4 x 11-3/4 inches), 6 panel form of which only pages 1 and 2 were required to be filled in. They are filled in completely, not only with information about Kaltenbrunner’s income but with information about his rental housing, son Hans Georg and daughter Gertrude as well. There is an 11-line paragraph describing in detail what Dr. Ernst Kaltenbrunner did in 1942 in carrying out his duties as a SS and Police General. On page 2 there are 14 lines in a paragraph relating to the income he derived from the two positions he held with the Nazi Government of Germany. The document was prepared and signed by Oberregierungsrat Konstantin on 1 June 1942. This Gebührnisanordnung for a Polizeibeamten is an absolutely fascinating and important piece of mid-20th century history, of a sort virtually never offered for sale. This tax return is from the collection of authors Ray & Josephine Cowdery and comes with a signed and dated Certificate of Authenticity |
