VERY RARE 1933 NAZI BOOK CONTESTING “ATROCITY PROPAGANDA AGAINST JEWS IN NAZI GERMANY” IN FOREIGN COUNTRIES

This is a very rare and controversial First Edition Third Reich book with text in German, English and French languages as published by Jakow Trachtenberg Verlag of Berlin-Charlottenburg in 1933. It is called Die Greuelpropaganda ist eine Lügenpropaganda sagen die deutschen Juden selbst -Atrocity Propaganda is Based on Lies say the Jews of Germany Themselves - La propagande d'atrocites n'est que mensonges déclarent les Juifs Allemands eux-memes.

Greuelpropaganda takes on and attempts to refute the anti-German news and international boycott of German products in foreign countries following political violence around the time the National Socialists were elected to power in Germany in early 1933 and the immediate anti-communist revolution that accompanied it. The violence surrounding the Nazi ascent to power got a lot of international attention (especially in the press in the United States), and according to this book was blown out of proportions and incorrectly labeled as violence against Jews, instead of the reigning in communist troublemakers.

The First Edition hardcover “Atrocity Propaganda” book starts with statements by Reichskanzler Adolf Hitler (via his Foreign Press Secretary Hanfstaengel), Vice Chancellor Franz von Papen, Foreign Minister Freiherr von Neurath, Prussian Prime Minister Hermann Göring, and Reichsminister Dr. Joseph Goebbels all protesting and denying anti-German reports and statements about abuse and mistreatment of Jews in Nazi Germany printed in the foreign press by “sources that apparently have an interest to poison public opinion about Germany and discredit the new German government.”

According to Freiherr von Neurath, the goal of the “National Revolution in Germany” was to eradicate the Marxist danger from German society and to create peace and order for all citizens of Germany, including Jews.

Above, Dr. Max Naumann warns against repeating the World War I atrocity propaganda that focussed on supposed looting and pillage, rape, mutilation and torture by German soldiers. Dr. Kurt Singer, Manager of the Berlin Municipal Opera, echoes the same sentiments below.

In the front of the book, directly following the statement by publisher Trachtenberg shown above is a picture of a notarized statement dated 11 May 1933 certifying that the German text in the letters printed in this book is the correct translations from their foreign language originals.

Vice Chancellor von Papen also mentioned the danger posed by communist elements in Germany, and that these were being dealt with. However, he denied mistreatment of German Jews and stated that hundreds of thousands of Jews live in Germany unchallenged, able to run their businesses without any interruptions.

Hermann Göring did not deny that thousands of communist officials (including communist Jews) were arrested, but that all of them were treated exactly like all other prisoners. Dr. Goebbels expressed his regrets that some people had fallen victim to the incorrect picture painted about the new Germany in some nations. He emphasized that whatever happens in the new Germany, happens in peace, in an orderly and disciplined fashion.

This rare 90 year old book also contains a chapter with statements by Jewish organizations discrediting the stories about “atrocities against Jews” that were being spread outside Nazi Germany. They include organizations such as the Reichsbund jüdischer Frontsoldaten eV (the official association of German World War I Jewish Frontline Soldiers), The Israelite-Sephardic Society of Berlin, The Committee of the Jewish Community of Berlin, the Grand Rabbi of Paris, Prussian Federation of Orthodox Synagogue Communities, Saxon Federation of Jews, Zionist Association of Germany, the German-Israelitic Congregation of Hamburg, etc., etc.

Also published in Die Greuelpropaganda ist eine Lügenpropaganda sagen die deutschen Juden selbst are articles from German newspapers such as the Berliner Tageblatt, Berliner Morgenpost, Frankfurter Zeitung, CV Gazette, Jewish Revue and the Israelite Family Journal of Hamburg, all condemning the embellished tales of atrocities that are being spread without foundation. A writer of the Jüdische Rundschau (“known and respected in every country”), urged moderation and tried to act as a calming influence. ….”we do not wish to see the Jewish question used as a cloak for other political aims or to watch while other political powers and groups flight their own battles on the back of the Jews. We regret therefore that many foreign newspapers, not otherwise entirely sympathetic to Jews, print reports of Jewish persecution in Germany to strengthen their own opposition to Germany or the German government by a universal appeal to humanity….”

This 90 year old, First Edition 7-¾ x 10 inch, 142-page trilingual hardcover book has fine off-white pages and is very rare and in very good condition. The interior pages of Atrocity Propaganda is Based on Lies say the Jews of Germany Themselves are in pristine condition. It has only minimal wear to the edges of the hard covers, a tight spine and no odor whatsoever.

Well-known Jewish personalities also weighed in - German rabbis, German lawyers, the president of the German Rabbinical-Union, Berlin banker Wallach, Oskar Wassermann of Deutsche Bank, and even Dr. Kurt Singer, Manager of the Berlin Municipal Opera.
